So, you have a fresh website and your ideas are boiling over, but you’re not quite sure how to get your thoughts down on the page. Alternatively, maybe you have your page all typed out and it just doesn’t read that well to you. Don’t fret, a few tweaks can improve a lot.

Try these five tips to quickly improve the content on your website:

proud-of-websiteUse your Headings. If you’ve played around with your website’s editor toolbar, you probably noticed some “Heading” selections in a little drop-down with a “Paragraph” label on it. Highlighting your text and choosing one of those options will format your text to that style and size. You can think of these options as saved “presets”.

Try highlighting your page’s title and selecting “Heading 1”. You can also use “Heading 2 or 3” for your sub titles, if you’d like. If you use this method across all your pages, you can achieve a balanced layout throughout your website. Headings are also very important to search engines, as they use your headings to index the content of your pages. This is a great area to place an important keyword as well, so be mindful of that.

Name your links. Properly naming your hyperlinks is a great habit to start. It not only catches and directs the attention of the reader, it also helps the search engines determine the subject of the page that you’re linking to, therefore, giving you a chance to increase your rankings. For example, let’s say you own a furniture website. You want to create a link on a page that points to your red lawn chairs. Instead of, “Click here for more chairs“, try changing it to “View our red lawn chairs” instead.

Utilize bullet points. The Internet is a place of short attention spans. It can be hard to get your point across quickly. Using bullet points can really help with this. You can use them when listing out several topics like multiple services or products. If you plan on going into detail on each subject, try starting the paragraph with a couple of words that summarize what you’re about to say. Take a look at this blog post, as an example.

Break up your text. Have you ever read a page with no paragraphs? I bet reading it was a chore, right? Breaking your page up into more digestible chunks will make it much easier to read and keep your visitors engaged. You can also rearrange your text to guide the reader along. Try to isolate subtitles and calls to action to bring attention to them.

Think before placing images. Photos can serve more of a purpose than just looking pretty. Your images can really change the layout of your page, allowing you to shift the focus to a particular area or making text easier to consume for the reader. Before resizing your photos, think about the text on the page and resize based on the form of the page. Do you want text to wrap around the photo? Add margin to the edges of the image, which can be done through your website’s editor toolbar.
